BN TRIUMP IN BATANG AI

LUBOK ANTU (7 April) - Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Malcolm Mussen Lamoh trounced PKR candidate Jawah Gerang with a majority of 1,854 votes in the Batang Ai by-election.
Mussen polled 3,907 votes against Jawah’s 2,053 votes. The total number of voters who cast their votes were 5, 960 or 75.23% out of the 8006 registered voters in the constituency.
The result was announced by Returning Officer, Nelson Mujah Giri at 7.45 pm at the Lubuk Antu Sports Complex here last night.
After the announcement, the jubilant Mussen was immediately hoisted by the top BN leaders and supporters who were led by PRS President and Director of Operations of the by-election Dato Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, PRS Deputy President Joseph Entulu Belaun, PBB Deputy President II Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun\ Abang Haji Openg, PBB Senior vice presidents Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengfah Ali Hassan and Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas and State Legislative Assembly Speaker Dato Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar and other top BN leaders.
Jawah was not present during the announcement of the result. He was represented by Padungan State Assemblyman Dominique Ng.
Later Mussen told the media that the victory was made even sweeter to mark his 50th birthday present which falls today (April 8).
“This is also a victory for the BN and I would like to thank all those who have helped in this by-election,” he said, adding that he was even ready to accept defeat.
“I will continue on with what has been planned for this area. But if I am elected again two years from now, I would have my own programme,” he said.
He believed that with his vas experience in implementing the government projects before as a civil servant, he would not have any problem in implementing the government’s ongoing projects for constituency.
Mussen, a former Agriculture Engineer, added that the Government do not subscribe to Mee Segera (instant noodle) projects.
“We need to plan all the projects properly for the people in Batang Ai,” he said.
Meanwhile, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Dato Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar said Mussen will be sworn in a member of the State Legislative Assembly on May 11 when the DUN Sitting begins.
“He will be sworn in as a Member of the State Legislative Assembly in front of the Tuan Yang di-Pertua Negeri on May 11. He will then take his seat with next to the rest of the Backbenchers,” he added.
The by-lection was called following the death of Batang Ai State Assemblyman the late Datuk Dublin Unting on February 24.
In the last general election in 2006, Unting beat SNAP candidate Nicholas Mawin with a majority of 806 votes.
